Dr. Stevenson’s Work in Cancer Treatment & Research
Much of Dr. Stevenson’s work in cancer treatment and research has been in the field of immunotherapy.
Immunotherapy is a cancer treatment that uses a patient’s own immune system to fight cancer, and many doctors are feeling optimistic about its benefits for mesothelioma.
By continuing to explore immunotherapy treatments in clinical trials, Dr. Stevenson hopes to improve the prognosis (health outcome) and quality of life of mesothelioma patients.
He’s been particularly encouraged by the results from the CheckMate 743 clinical trial, which revealed that the combination of the immunotherapy drugs Opdivo® and Yervoy® helped patients live an average of 3 months longer than chemotherapy.
“It turns out that as we look closer at [the CheckMate 743] trial, immunotherapy probably works better in some patients than chemotherapy. We don’t interpret this trial as immunotherapy replacing chemotherapy but as an additional treatment.”
