Finding Support with Mesothelioma Hope

Duration: Category: Legal Show Transcript

My name is Steve, and my father was diagnosed with mesothelioma.

When my dad first received the diagnosis, it was really confusing and pretty jarring. We just didn’t know what the next turn was going to look like. Everything felt uncertain, and we were trying to process what this diagnosis meant for him and for our family.

When I first found out that my dad had mesothelioma, I came across a hotline for Mesothelioma Hope. I called the number, but I honestly didn’t know what to say or how to explain everything that was going on. The woman I spoke with made me feel like it was okay to be vulnerable and share my story. She listened and allowed me to talk about what we were experiencing.

She provided a lot of helpful information and sent me binders filled with pamphlets, books, and resources about support groups. It felt really reassuring to know there were people out there willing to do whatever they could to help us through the situation we were facing.

I would encourage anyone going through something similar to find the courage through the fear and make the phone call, even if you’re not sure what to say. Just do it. There are people out there who can support you, help you, and truly understand what you’re going through. Hearing someone say, “Me too. I know what you’re thinking. I know what you’re feeling,” creates an environment where you can feel a little safer.

I hope people understand that this isn’t our fault, and there’s no reason to feel like you’re facing it alone.
