Living with mesothelioma can be overwhelming in ways that go far beyond physical symptoms. Between managing treatment, coping with side effects, and adjusting to changes in daily life, it’s normal to feel like your routine has been turned upside down.

The good news is that there are meaningful steps you can take to feel better and regain a sense of control. Research continues to show that cancer patients who focus on quality of life often feel stronger, more comfortable, and better equipped to handle treatment.

“Focusing on nutrition, seeking support, and effectively managing symptoms can enhance your quality of life and help you navigate the challenges of mesothelioma more easily.”

Learn how you can take control of your quality of life and improve how you feel after a mesothelioma diagnosis.

Palliative Care for Symptom Management

Managing mesothelioma symptoms such as pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, and nausea is one of the most important parts of improving how you feel day to day. This is where palliative care can make a real difference.

Starting palliative care soon after a mesothelioma diagnosis can help patients feel better and manage their symptoms. This is backed by a review of over 50 medical studies by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).

Palliative care for mesothelioma can include:

  • Alternative treatments like acupuncture or massage
  • Breathing exercises and oxygen therapy
  • Medications to prevent nausea after chemotherapy
  • Mesothelioma pain management
  • Paracentesis to drain fluid from the abdomen
  • Physical therapy to boost appetite
  • Radiation therapy to shrink tumors
  • Thoracentesis or pleurodesis to drain fluid from the lungs

Palliative care is not the same as hospice care, and it can be used alongside surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or radiation. You can receive palliative care at any stage of mesothelioma to ease symptoms.

Diet and Nutrition

Diet and nutrition are fundamental to your overall well-being, especially when fighting mesothelioma.

A study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that mesothelioma patients are at risk of malnutrition. Malnutrition can lead to fatigue, irritability, and a weakened immune system, which can severely impact quality of life and make it harder to recover from mesothelioma treatment.

Here are some tips to help you maintain a healthy diet:

  • Choose whole grains with high fiber content, such as brown rice or whole wheat bread, to promote digestive health.
  • Include a variety of fruits and vegetables in daily meals to ensure you’re getting essential vitamins and minerals.
  • Increase your protein intake by including lean meats, fish, eggs, beans, and nuts in your diet.
  • Maintain a healthy weight to support your overall health and enhance your body’s ability to cope with cancer treatments.
  • Seek the help of a dietitian to get a diet plan that accommodates any allergies or dietary restrictions.

Physical Activity

Physical activity is not only safe for mesothelioma patients but also highly recommended. Just 15 minutes of light walking can lift your mood and make you feel more energized.

Moving your body can also increase muscle mass, strength, and overall physical well-being while fighting mesothelioma, according to a report in Current Oncology.

Remember these tips when incorporating exercise into your routine:

  • Keep it simple and choose a type of exercise you enjoy.
  • Set daily or weekly exercise goals to stay motivated.
  • Take breaks or adjust your routine based on your energy levels.
  • Try to be kind to yourself on days when exercise isn’t possible.

Physical activity doesn’t have to be intense to be meaningful. Focusing on what you can do each day can enhance your quality of life instead of adding unnecessary stress or pressure.

Emotional Support

For many patients, connecting with others who share similar experiences through mesothelioma support groups is crucial to maintaining a good quality of life.

While family and loved ones can offer emotional support, they may not fully understand the unique challenges of a mesothelioma diagnosis. This is where finding a community can make a big difference in your mood and overall outlook on life.

We invite patients and caregivers to join Mesothelioma Hope’s monthly online support group, a safe and welcoming space to connect, share, and find encouragement from others who understand what you’re going through.

Specialized Mesothelioma Care

Specialists play a key role in mesothelioma treatment and improving quality of life by creating care plans that control the cancer and ease symptoms.

Mesothelioma doctors focus on what works best for each patient and can adjust treatment plans as your symptoms and daily needs evolve.

“Our patients are being cared for by people who are really invested in their well-being, who value quality of life as much as extension of life.”

Dr. Joseph Friedberg, mesothelioma specialist at Temple University Fox Chase Cancer Center

A mesothelioma specialist can also help coordinate supportive care, manage treatment side effects, and connect you with additional resources such as palliative care and clinical trials.
