Mesothelioma Program at Van Elslander Cancer Center
One of the specializations at Van Elslander is treating peritoneal mesothelioma. This type of mesothelioma is the second most common type after pleural mesothelioma.
In peritoneal mesothelioma, cancer forms in the peritoneum, which is the lining of the abdominal cavity.
“I began to operate on and take care of patients with mesothelioma and developed a strong interest in the treatment needed and how best to ensure patients with peritoneal mesothelioma would receive the best care with the highest quality outcome.”
—Dr. Richard Berri, Chief of Surgical Oncology at Van Elslander Cancer Center
One of the main issues surgeons face when treating this form of cancer is that peritoneal mesothelioma does not grow in one large tumor — it’s a bunch of smaller tumors. These small tumors are more difficult for surgeons to see and remove. However, Van Elslander Cancer Center has the experience and skill to face these challenges.

Mesothelioma Treatment Options
While Van Elslander Cancer Center treats all forms of mesothelioma, it specializes in treating peritoneal mesothelioma through a team of oncologists and specialists who have dedicated their careers to treating the rare disease.
Did You Know?Van Elslander Cancer Center has one of the highest-volume nationally recognized HIPEC programs in the country.
Mesothelioma treatment is determined for each patient on an individual basis and may include:
- Cytoreductive surgery: Used for peritoneal mesothelioma patients, the procedure involves removing as much of the visible cancer as possible from the peritoneum. This specialized surgery is often used in combination with HIPEC.
- Hyperthermic peritoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC): A patient receives a cycle of warmed chemotherapy drugs. These drugs are circulated throughout the abdomen to any cancer cells that may be left over after cytoreductive surgery.
- Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT): An advanced radiation therapy that uses a high dose of radiation tailored to the tumor so it causes less damage to surrounding areas. The procedure uses computer-controlled X-ray accelerators to guide the dosage to the tumors.
- Chemotherapy: Delivers medication to target and kill off mesothelioma cells so they cannot spread throughout the body. It may also shrink tumors and reduce painful symptoms associated with tumor growth.
Mesothelioma treatment may also involve immunotherapy and targeted therapy, including cancer vaccines and gene therapy.
Clinical Trials and Research at Van Elslander Cancer Center
While Van Elslander Cancer Center focuses more on patient care and treatment than research, its medical teams still match their patients with appropriate mesothelioma clinical trials.
These trials test the safety and efficacy of new drug treatments, radiation technologies (like IMRT), and surgeries. Clinical trials are incredibly important for patients with mesothelioma and other cancers.
