A former football player – turned firefighter and business owner – is facing criminal charges for illegally handling asbestos, The Buffalo News is reporting.

Sean Doctor works as a city firefighter in Buffalo and also owns and operates an asbestos removal firm called S. D. Specialty Services.  Doctor played 2 seasons for the Buffallo Bills after starring at Marshall University.

EPA investigators raided the firm’s property on Tuesday (April 19) and found ““significant amount” of asbestos waste that had not been properly secured, labeled or disposed of.

“Through investigation, it was determined that the asbestos-containing material on the site came from projects that [Doctor] had worked on,” US Prosecutor Aaron Mango said. He also claimed that NY state safety inspectors found that some of the firm’s employees were not handling the cancer-causing material using required safety equipment on a recent inspection.

Lung cancer and mesothelioma are the most serious risks of asbestos exposure. Both conditions can be fatal and mesothelioma almost always causes death. Both types of asbestos cancer can develop at least 15 years after the initial exposure, and mesothelioma can develop up to 50 years after exposure.
