Mesothelioma Treatment Options at Emory Winship Cancer Institute

At Winship Cancer Institute, mesothelioma patients have access to advanced treatment options, including surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiation therapy.

Surgery

Surgery is recommended for patients diagnosed in the earliest stages of mesothelioma.

Winship mesothelioma surgeons are experienced in:

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy involves the use of drugs to kill cancer cells or stop their growth. For mesothelioma, chemotherapy is often used with surgery to keep the cancer from returning.

As a treatment for mesothelioma, chemotherapy can be used:

  • Before surgery (neoadjuvant) to shrink tumors and make them easier to remove
  • After surgery (adjuvant) to destroy any remaining cancer cells and reduce the risk of recurrence
  • As a standalone treatment to control symptoms in patients who don’t qualify for surgery

Common chemotherapy drugs for mesothelioma include pemetrexed combined with cisplatin or carboplatin. Emory Winship Cancer Institute provides personalized chemotherapy regimens that factor in your mesothelioma stage and overall health.

Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy is a newer mesothelioma treatment that helps the body’s immune system recognize and attack cancer cells. It can be especially effective for patients who are not candidates for surgery or whose cancer has advanced.

Winship offers these FDA-approved immunotherapy drugs:

These medications work by blocking proteins that prevent the immune system from attacking cancer, allowing the body to more effectively target mesothelioma cells.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy uses high-energy rays to target and destroy cancer cells.

Radiation can be used:

  • As a main treatment for patients who can’t get surgery in order to control tumor growth and ease symptoms
  • After surgery to kill remaining cancer cells and reduce the risk of recurrence
  • Palliatively to relieve pain and other symptoms caused by tumors pressing on surrounding tissues

Winship’s radiation oncologists use advanced imaging technologies to precisely deliver radiation, minimizing damage to healthy tissues and reducing side effects.

Mesothelioma Clinical Trials & Research at Emory Winship Cancer Institute

Winship actively participates in mesothelioma clinical trials. These trials help bring innovative new treatments to cancer patients before they’re available to the broader public, with the ultimate goal of improving length and quality of life.

Eligible patients have the opportunity to enroll in cancer research studies for new chemotherapy agents, immunotherapies, and other emerging treatments.

One trial is combining a new immunotherapy, volrustomig, with the standard chemotherapy drugs carboplatin and pemetrexed to see if it works better than current treatment options for people with inoperable pleural mesothelioma (cancer of the lung lining).
