On July 29, 2024, a Chicago jury ruled against Avon Products, Inc. and awarded $24.4 million to Cipriano Ramirez and his family. The talcum powder lawsuit claimed Ramirez developed mesothelioma after being exposed to talc at an Avon facility.
For decades, Avon made and sold cosmetic talc products like baby powder that may have been contaminated with asbestos. Exposure to asbestos can cause mesothelioma, lung cancer, ovarian cancer, and other serious diseases.

About the 2024 Avon Talc Verdict
In 2023, Cipriano Ramirez was diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma, a rare cancer of the lung lining. When his family realized his cancer diagnosis was connected to asbestos exposure, they sought the help of national law firm Simmons Hanly Conroy, Mesothelioma Hope’s trusted legal partner.
“Mr. Ramirez dedicated his life to working hard for his family,” said Jim Kramer, one of the lead mesothelioma trial attorneys in the Avon lawsuit. “He should be enjoying retirement but has been forced to spend his time fighting a cancer that could have been prevented.”
Ramirez worked as a janitor at Avon’s manufacturing facility in Morton Grove, just outside Chicago, in the early 1980s. This facility produced talcum powder products that were contaminated with asbestos.
His asbestos attorneys presented evidence showing that:
- His cancer was caused by exposure to asbestos in Avon talc powder.
- Avon knew some of its products contained asbestos.
- The company failed to protect its workers and consumers.
“No amount of money can give Mr. Ramirez his health back, but we are so proud of how hard this jury worked to hold Avon accountable on his family’s behalf,” stated Jennifer Alesio, another lead trial attorney in the case.
Avon removed asbestos from its talc powder products in 2020 after being acquired by the beauty company Natura &Co.

The Link Between Mesothelioma and Talcum Powder
Talc is a naturally occurring mineral that must be mined from the earth to use. It’s often found alongside asbestos, another mineral that causes serious health problems like cancer.
During the mining process, talc can become contaminated with asbestos fibers that are invisible to the naked eye. Factories then crush talc to make talcum powder, which is often used in cosmetic products to absorb moisture.
However, when families use baby powders and other talc-based personal hygiene products, they can inadvertently breathe in or swallow tiny asbestos fibers.
These asbestos fibers can then become lodged in the lungs, causing irritation and inflammation. Symptoms of mesothelioma may begin to appear 10-50 years later.
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you were likely exposed to asbestos and may qualify for legal payouts. Over $30 billion has already been set aside for patients and their families, and our partner attorneys are proud to fight for you in court if needed.
