Our monthly support group meets virtually, providing a dedicated space for patients, families, and caregivers to gather, share, learn, and find community with one another.

Mesothelioma Hope has launched a new monthly virtual support group for mesothelioma patients, families, and caregivers, creating a structured space for participants to share experiences, ask questions, and access guided emotional support.

The meetings are led by Lindsey Rotnem, a licensed independent social worker with a background in oncology social work. The group is co-led by Liz Logan, RN, and Major Jonathan Nelson (Ret.), who are available during sessions to address specific questions and provide guidance on patient support.

This online support group is intended to address the isolation and uncertainty that often accompany a rare and complex diagnosis like mesothelioma.

“In my role with Mesothelioma Hope, my goal is to provide a supportive atmosphere that allows patients to feel less isolated and provides coping skills to manage emotions.”

Lindsey Rotnem, MSW, Oncology Social Worker

Building a Supportive Mesothelioma Community

The support group is structured as an ongoing initiative rather than a one-time event. The sessions are intended to provide continuity for participants who may be adjusting to new treatment schedules, caring responsibilities, and needs that may evolve over time.

In addition to general peer discussion, sessions include opportunities for participants to raise concerns that commonly arise for families affected by asbestos exposure, including questions about support options, communication, and coping strategies for anxiety and uncertainty.

“One thing that can make a mesothelioma diagnosis feel more manageable is having a community to support you. Our hope is to foster a space where patients and caregivers can share, connect, and feel less alone. We’re in this together.”

The group held its first session on December 17 and will continue as a monthly recurring program with an emphasis on shared experience, guided discussion, and access to patient-advocacy support. The sessions are professionally guided, with clear boundaries about what support groups can provide. The goal is to complement, but not replace, medical care by offering a stable environment for conversation, coping support, and resource navigation.

Mesothelioma Hope was established by medical and legal advocates to help patients and caregivers find practical guidance and reliable resources during a period that can involve complicated treatment decisions, shifting financial realities, and significant emotional strain. The organization’s new support group is part of that effort, with sessions built to support both patients and loved ones navigating the day-to-day realities of care planning, symptom management, and the broader family impact of serious illness.

In addition to our monthly virtual support group meetings, our team can help you:

  • Understand your diagnosis or get a second opinion
  • Find a doctor who specializes in your type of mesothelioma
  • Explore financial options and ways to pay for treatment

We’re standing by to help. Give us a call at (866) 608-8933 with any questions, or sign up for our support group here.
